The Best of 2014: Books I read

I began this series of posts yesterday by telling y’all about the best bloggers I know. Today we’re going to talk about the best books I read in 2014. Although not over yet, it’ll be my worst reading year since high school. I’ve only made it through seven books. Seven. Oh well. But there were some standouts among those seven that I do want to talk about. Remember these are NOT books released in 2014 but books I read in 2014.

#1 The Diary of a Young Girl – Anne Frank

I read this book as part of my journey to read every book on Amazon’s 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This isn’t really a book. It’s her diary, as you well know. And maybe that’s why it really hit me like it did. She takes you through every emotion imaginable and she does so in such an eloquent manner that you can’t help but be impressed by her grasp of the written word. She’s able to take you back to one of the worst periods the world has ever known, and she does it while in hiding. It’s a remarkable work that everyone should read.

I currently have this book ranked #1 on my list of the best books I’ve ever read. There’s no doubt that it will stay there for some time. Here’s the post I wrote the day after finishing it.

#2 The Drop (Harry Bosch #15) – Michael Connelly

Michael Connelly is right near the top of my favorite authors and I’ve never once been disappointed by one of his Bosch novels. The Drop is no exception. Bosch is working two cases at once. One is the death of a city councilman’s son and the other is a cold case. That’s all I’ll say. It’s vintage Bosch and I already have the next book in the series on my shelf.

I currently have this book ranked #13 on my list of the best books I’ve ever read. One spot ahead of the third and final book on the list.

#3 The Fault in Our Stars – John Green

The_Fault_in_Our_Stars

I don’t need to tell you anything about this book because you’ve probably already read it and made up your own mind about the story itself. This was the first time I’d read any YA title since Mockingjay in 2012. I really enjoyed this book. Yeah I thought Gus was too perfect and I thought the way he talked to Hazel was a little too much for a couple of teens, but those are pretty minor things. I loved them both as characters and John Green got millions of people to read about a tricky subject.

I currently have this book ranked #14 on my list of the best books I’ve ever read. Here’s the post I wrote about it earlier this year.

So that’s it! Those are the three best books I read this year! Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone just missed being included in the list. I won’t ask if you’ve read these titles because you’ve almost certainly read at least two of them, but I would like to know what your top reads of the year were. Tell me now.

  1. Let’s see. I have to confess that some of these are books we published this year. Don’t take this as a commercial though as I don’t have much time to read other author’s books–too busy reading for work, But one finds one’s reading pleasure where one can find it, right. Anyway, early in the year I read a delightful book entitled, At This Stage by K.K Weil, a New Adult Romance. Next I read The Problem With Goodbye by Jana Hollifield, a Romantic Thriller, then Whiskey, Large by Nina Wright. This is Ms. Wright’s 7th in the Whiskey Mattimoe Mystery Series, after which I read Jana Hollifield’s second Novel, this time a straight mystery featuring some of the same characters as her first novel, The Problem With Second Chances.we also published,
I read One Lavender Ribbon, a delightful romance by Heather Burch. With this one, I finally had some time for a purely fun read. Ms. Burch also writes YA, the titles of which are, Halflings, Guardian, and Avenger. These I have not read, but it they are anything like the romance, they should be great. We didn’t publish any of these–Darn!!

Presently I’m putting finishing touches on Trouble Magnet by Cat Cervantes. This is Cat’s first novel but a real hoot to read. It has that chick-lit feel but is also a romance and a thriller. Fun!! it will be released this month (Dec). I’m now reading Jack of All Trades by Dennis Jung, author of Still Life in a Red Dress, described by one of his fans as a combination, mystery, thriller, historical and romance.

Jack of all Trades features photo journalist Harper Harris, the reporter from Red Dress in this story’s leading role. Dennis writes books that are of literary quality and read like great motion pictures, Jack of all Trades will be released in early January.

  2. I’m a recent new fan of Michael Connelly’s and enjoyed “The Drop” very much. It happened to be my first read of his Harry Bosch series. I read the “Lincoln Lawyer” last year and liked that a lot, too, but the best of the three MC’s I’ve read is ‘The Brass Verdict,” the second in the Mickey Haller series.

For some reason, Mickey resonates with me (and, NO, I am NOT a lawyer 🙂 ). But the skill of Connelly in weaving an intricate plot with numerous twists with several compelling subplots is craftsmanship at its best. The bonus is a detailed inside look at the nuts and bolts of trial law, and it’s presented in a fascinating manner. Who’da thunk jury selection could be so dramatic?!

Glad Anne Frank was up there too. Should be required reading of anyone living in a “democracy.” Never take your freedom or what’s left of it, for granted. Circumstances can change overnight.

  3. I’ve been working my way through the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child. I love these books and Jack Reacher has become one of my favourite characters. Also, I’ve really enjoyed J.K. Rowling’s adult detective series featuring Cormoran Strike.

  4. Hi John
Top three books for this year? Now that’s tough. As I am fantasy fan my top three would be
    1. Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson
    2. Blood Song by Anthony Ryan
    3. The Emperor’s Blades by Brian Staveley

There are so many other good reads out there. Like John Callaghan I love the Jack Reacher series by Lee Childs and I read Band of Brothers for about the tenth time this year so it is a hard choice.
