Stick With it

During the course of my time on WordPress I’ve discovered that my opinions about many things are often in the minority. Let me just list off a few things that I’m talking about.

I could probably go on and on, but the point that I’m making is that at least I’m honest. It’d be easy for me to just say and do what everyone else does, but why should I? And why does my opinion matter so much? I’m asking because just yesterday I discovered multiple bloggers write posts specifically to talk about my post on book hangovers. They weren’t happy about what I had to say. I didn’t read either of them, but I noticed that they basically went line by line down my post to dispute or disagree with something I said. That’s fine. Go, them. But it really got me thinking about why my opinion is such a big deal, because it shouldn’t be. Imagine going into a grocery store and asking for a stranger’s opinion on something and then immediately disputing what they had to say. It sounds ridiculous.

My opinion is my opinion. Sure I’m more direct than most bloggers on WordPress, but so what? If you don’t like what I have to say, then don’t comment or Like or unfollow if you must (I think someone did yesterday). But don’t sit there and act like I’m attacking you personally. Think of ALL the worse things I could do, but I’m blogging about books.

The point of this is to say that my opinions are my own and yours are yours. I can guarantee that you won’t be changing mine, no matter what you say. And I don’t set out to change yours. We’re strangers over a blogging platform, or did you forget?

On this day in 2014 I published Reading Multiple Books at Once.

  1. I love how honest you are it’s brilliant. I’d love for you to read my books one day because I’d get such honest feedback but you don’t take book recommendations… Haha keep up your honest blogging stranger

      • Hehe. Well it’s a five book YA fantasy series. The first three books will be available on amazon kindle later this year πŸ™‚

They’re about sixteen year old Oliver who discovers the existence of six other worlds after his adopted sister falls ill to a lethal curse. The curse links her to the famous, fanatical terrorist, Isaac Rimori, who murdered Oliver’s father in cold blood to gain access to the seventh world. The only way to save his sister is by travelling to the other worlds, but each one is locked by a formidable challenge and time is running out.

What is your book about. Is it on amazon?

      • I like your description. Even though I’ve never read anything like that, it’s well written and enticing.

What’s my book about? Ugh. A private detective working his first case. Ha! I used to have this nice little bit that I told people when they asked this question, but I haven’t told anyone about it in forever. But it’s on Amazon and the link is in my sidebar. You don’t have to look it up. It was rushed because I was so happy to have written it. Haha

    • I think it’s just my writing style. I definitely try to write my posts in a manner that gets people thinking, but I’m not sitting at my computer trying to piss people off. Especially when it’s books we’re talking about.

  2. Hmmmm. Well I did not really agree with your post yesterday but it’s not really something I’d get upset over. You and I have different experiences with reading. That’s cool. The world is vast and we have much to explore.

  3. Well I enjoy your posts, and I think I agree with you on a couple of your points…I don’t re read books, and I read for enjoyment only too!!!

  4. I also enjoy your posts and have the same opinions in that i don’t reread books and read for enjoyment only. Keep up the good work!

  5. Thank you for your post. I don’t review books either, and I sometimes feel that no one wants to read a blog that’s just about books in general. But, also like you, I don’t care that most people seem to want book review blogs. Blogs are supposed to be fun channels for personal expression! So there. Non-review power!!

  6. Honesty this the best! Don’t ever let go of it. (I don’t think you will anyway, am I right?)
I agree with you that our opinions are our own, and that sometimes it is quite ridiculous the way people argue about their opinions! It’s good to discuss differing opinions, but at the same time you’ve gotta agree to disagree!

  7. Ha! I don’t agree with a bunch of stuff you say, but I think you usually have a fair point. I like your posts because they make me consider a different view from my own. And what’s the point in only engaging with people you agree with? You may as well just ‘engage’ with yourself.
And I only read books I want to too. There’s a ton of authors every writer is ‘supposed’ to read because they’re geniuses and I haven’t because I’m not interested in the subject matter – Hemingway being a prime example.

    • Engaging with yourself sounds…bad. Haha! And yes, you’re right. I also don’t read those authors that I’m “supposed” to. I’ve never read Hemingway, but I think I’ll read at least one of his books at some point because I think he’s on the Amazon list.

      • Thank god – someone else who hasn’t read Hemingway. I mentioned this on another blog a few weeks ago and someone got a bit sniffy with me, gave me a litle lecure on authors I really should make myself read! Life’s too short and novels are supposed to entertain.

      • Haha I’d have laughed and then tweeted a screenshot of their comment. Cause I’m an adult who does adult things. Life’s too short and novels are supposed to entertain. Put that on a bumper sticker.

  8. It’s hilarious how different our views are on bookish things and yet we still get along. But that’s the point, right? People who are so different can still find common ground and have a few laughs. People are just too uptight and easily offended in general.

  9. I think I’ve said it before, but I read your blog due to your difference of opinion. I do enjoy finding people who have similar tastes or ideas as myself, but I also like to mix it up and read something that makes me think more about how I think and feel. Also I enjoy watching you go back and forth with some of your commenters when you don’t agree. πŸ˜€

But I can’t imagine writing a dispute post against someone else’s thoughts on a blog – perhaps something inspired by a certain post, to explore one’s own feelings on the matter. Buuuut social media is full of disputes and arguments so I’m not surprised that happened.

  10. Ah yes, you don’t get book hangovers – you are therefore wrong, all your opinions on anything are invalid and I hate you more than soggy biscuits now… or something to that effect.
