Oh no, call the authorities!
This is something that sounds a little weird to me. Germany has just updated a law that makes it a crime to buy erotic-type eBooks during the day. Seriously.
So no Grey for you this week. I’m obviously not familiar with the law over there, but they might as well say that people can’t watch rated R movies during the day or (cover your eyes, little people) watch porn or anything they want. Who knows, maybe that’s already the case. I just think it’s a little ridiculous to force people to buy these types of eBooks between 10:00 at night and 6:00 in the morning. I haven’t seen anything about printed books, but maybe there’s some age restriction on these types of books over there? I have no idea. But I do know that anyone can walk into their local bookstore and buy any book they want to…in the US. Which is how it should be.
I’ve never read one of these books, but I think anyone who wants to should be able to. Without having to deal with this nonsense about buying them during the day.
What do you think about these sex-themed eBooks (I think that’s the official language used) only being sold at night? The next thing they’ll ban is sex during the day because your kid might walk in. *insert laughing emoji here*

Better idea: Teach kids about sex in age-appropriate ways and kill the taboo. Educate them completely so that, by the time they are old enough to make that choice, they are armed with ample knowledge. Society in general is WAY too concerned with what other people do in their own bedrooms.
This does remind me of living in Ohio… where it was illegal to buy alcohol (including cooking wine) before noon and on Sundays. Because, you know, you couldn’t possibly buy it after noon and consume it the next morning, or on Saturday so you could party all day Sunday.

I wonder how many countries actually gave decent sex education. For real. And in Texas you can’t buy alcohol before noon on Sundays. It’s HILARIOUS because there’s no basis for the law.

Is it to stop kids downloading the books themselves? Won’t work if that’s the case.
It is odd, because if you have the book on your Kindle (other e-readers are available) it doesn’t disappear, Cinderella-like, at the stroke of midnight. Download it Monday at 8 pm and it’s still gonna be there for you to read during brunch with your Auntie on the Tuesday – not that I’m recommending this, but you know what I mean.

After a quick search of BBC news, it seems the reason they’ve done this is over concerns children have too-easy access to adult themed books. What I’m saying is that if an adult has downloaded a book in the permitted window, the child would still be able to read their e-reader and look at the material at other times of day. It’s not gonna work

I know the reasoning. They should implement a law that eReaders be locked up at all times when not being used by an adult. 😂

I have read some erotica (though 50 shades was pretty terrible.) I think it is completely ludicrous to ban the sale of a book just in the day time. They are just making fools of themselves. Let people gobble up all the books they can get, at least they are reading.

It is. I also wonder why other things like murder or rape or war are perfectly okay to be read during all hours, but noooooo. Not sex.

If I were the Germans I’d hesitate to ban books after all of the book burning they did under the direction of Goebbels.

Do that many kids really want to sit down and read erotic books?? With smart phones and computers everywhere I would think that minors would go that route to get their erotica fix if they wanted one. And yes, as a previous poster pointed out, the Germans might want to re-think book bans considering how the whole mess turned out last time.

Exactly what I’d think. Kids have smartphone at such young ages now AND if they’re really trying to find something online, no parental controls are going to stop them. It’s been my understanding that Germany is very conservative, which I think this would be in line with. But I might be way off. I’m not actively keeping up with their affairs.

See, now I want to know if they’re going to ban reading fan-fiction, too, during certain times. I swear, I’ve seen more explicit fanfiction than even a full-blown, marketed ero novel (case in point for adult themed fanfiction: 50 shades apparently started as fanfiction of Twilight). If so, they’ll have a lot on their plates–that stuff is everywhere, on multiple different sites and platforms!

Like others, I thought I’d gone back in time to Nazi book burning days. It all seems a little odd, doesn’t it. Maybe a little fact checking needed? Mind you, odd things do hang around on statute books.

Kids always want what they are told they can’t have. But is buying porn really that easy? Maybe it is. I don’t know. I think it is best to be firm and frank with your kids about this and try to keep them away from it as best as you can…And then pray a lot 🙂
