Today is Valentine’s Day, right? All the love in the air. All the flowers slowly dying. All the chocolate being consumed. All the Teddy bears changing hands. But what about books? What kind of person doesn’t want books today?
So here are some suggestions for your Valentine’s Day reading fix. It’ll just be some authors.

Aw crap. I’m just naming random romance authors. You should read today if you want to. Maybe one of these authors is actually on your list. But contrary to what you’ve likely seen hopping around the internet in recent weeks, there is no particular book or genre you should be reading today. Once you’ve settled in and your activities for this “special” day are complete, why not take a few minutes to relax with a book?

I am starting a new series that my boa suggested to me. The book is called The Coming of the Horseclans by Robert Adams. Also I am planning to watch and possibly read some of the book The Princess Bride! Most epic love story evAR!

Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct novel _Killer’s Wedge_. Unconventional for Valentine’s Day but it is indeed a love story of sorts.

It is. Police procedural. His novel _King’s Ransom_ is what the Akira Kurosawa film “High and Low” used as inspiration (both the book and the film were fantastic in their own ways).

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. A very nontraditional epic fantasy. More brutal and graphic than it is romantic, at least so far.

I badly wanted to read Pablo Neruda's Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair, but I couldn't get through one line of it.
Ended up coloring in my new adult colouring book XD

Spent half the day working, then got home to find my husband had bought me chocolate and … books for Valentine’s Day! He knows me so well. He bought two books I’ve had on my ‘to buy’ list for ages, so great all round. And I’m reading Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman – still 🙂
I don’t read ‘romantic fiction’ or ‘chicklit’ or whatever you choose to call it. The closest I’ve come is Jane Austen. I’m more a fantasy, historical, adventure story sort of reader. Just the pastel coloured covers on ‘chicklit’ put me off – just the name of the genre is off putting too, actually!

Haha sounds like a nice day. I still haven’t read any Gaiman, though I’ve been thinking about it for some time. You’re right. The covers of romance novels are terrible. Terrible. I’ve noticed popular romance authors have strayed away from the super generic covers on their books on recent years, but if you go back to maybe the 90s you wouldn’t be able to differentiate one romance cover from another.

I find chicklit covers particularly offensive, because it suggests that publishers think ‘What do women like? Well, they like pink – and high heeled shoes and handbags. So let’s put those on every cover.’ Of course, these books sell in there thousands, which suggests the publishers are right and I’m in a small minority. Grrrrr!

And I would definitely recommend Gaiman if you’re up for some fantasy. Just finished Neverwhere yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it.
