The title of the post is a bit of a misstatement. What I actually need from you is something else.
I’m frantically trying to complete my 2016 reading challenge, right? One of the requirements I’ve known would give me trouble asks me to read a book published in 2016. That presents a problem because I rarely buy books during the first year of publication and I do not read series books out of order.
Which brings me to now. I’ve only zeroed in on one 2016 release that happens to be a standalone. But I know you all have read quite a few more books than I have this year, so now I need some recommendations. The requirements are simple. Originally published in 2016. CANNOT be part of a series if it isn’t the first book. Must be available from HPB.

Johnny Reads 
I just read Last Days of Night by Graham Moore. It is historical fiction and was pretty good. Here is the synopsis -When electric light innovator Thomas Edison sues his only remaining rival for patent infringement, George Westinghouse hires untested Columbia Law School graduate Paul Ravath for a case fraught with lies, betrayals, and deception.

Even though it is labeled as a romance, it is SO much more than that. I think you’ll like it.

I don’t get around to reading many books the first year they are published either – they’re too expensive when they first come out! However, I did read The Girls by Emma Cline. It’s a stand alone novel that describes how a young teen girl got involved with a cult in the 1960s. The cult members go on to commit a gory crime – very Manson-esque. The book got a lot of hype, but it wasn’t one of my favorites. It does fulfill your 2016 qualification though! You might also enjoy it because of your interest in crime stories; for instance, what goes through a person’s mind when they join up with a group of people who clearly are up to no good – and then what makes them carry out a bloody crime?
