Top Five Wednesday: Character Names

Today’s Top Five Wednesday topic is character names. Pretty self-explanatory. Let’s begin!

Katniss Everdeen

I love how unique the name is. And I hope to one day meet a girl named after Katniss. I’d tell her the person she’s named after is strong, independent, brave, and the Girl on Fire. Then she’d probably say duhh and walk away. Bleh.

Hieronymous Bosch

I’ve told y’all about Harry Bosch more times than I can remember. He’s named after the painter you may have heard of. I’m just glad Michael Connelly let’s us call him Harry.

Spenser

Another unique name. He’s named after the poet you may have heard of. But what really makes his name special is that his last name is never given during his series of books. He’s simply Spenser.

Hermione Granger

I mean, come on.

Master Chief

Technically his name is John-117 and he’s originally from a video game series before any book was ever written, BUT who doesn’t know Master Chief at this point? Seriously, who!? He’s the soldier we all secretly want to be. Leading entire armies and defeating monstrous enemies. Is that not your dream job?

Those are my five favorite character names! Tell me some of yours!

#WCW Bookish Edition

I’ve never once posted a #WCW on Twitter or Facebook or anywhere. Until today. For those of you not in with the new trendy lingo, #WCW just stands for “Woman Crush Wednesday.” No idea who comes with this stuff. And typically guys only post a picture of one girl/woman, but I’m going to post four. Anyway, you can think of these as my literary/bookish crushes.

Katniss Everdeen

There’s no need for me to explain why she’s first on my list. I’m basically obsessed with her. Or maybe it’s just the series as a whole? Or…I don’t know. Katniss is pretty much a superhero in my eyes. Yep.

Hermione Granger

She may not be as obvious as Katniss since I don’t talk about her every second of the day. BUT she’s still one of my favorite characters of any books or movies or life. I mean, I know there’s this whole thing about guys wanting to be smarter than their girlfriends or girl friends or whatever, but no. I have no issue with Hermione being a million times smarter than me. Is there anyone else who could have dealt with Ron and Harry as well as she did? I don’t think so. And let’s not forget that she seriously helped Harry with all that Chamber of Secrets business. And a million other things.

Anya Stroud

Oooooh. One y’all probably don’t know at all. She’s from the Gears of War books written by Karen Traviss and adapted from the bestselling games. If you have no idea what I’m talking about when I say Gears of War, just think of another human vs. monster kind of deal. That’s oversimplifying it, but eh. Anya is a soldier. But she is also able to get close to Marcus Fenix during their years of war. Guys, he’s as hardcore as it gets. But Anya is that one little soft spot he has. And she’s great for him.

Cortana

I almost didn’t include her. But I love reading about the Master Chief and she’s with him every step of the way. She’s his AI, she’s basically a computer linked to Master Chief and what he’s doing at all times. She does a whole lot more than just help reach the objective, and it’s hard to imagine Master Chief without Cortana. Though I think she meets her demise in the fourth installment of the game series. I think.250px-Cortana2557

So that’s it! My four bookish crushes for #WCW. Who are yours?

Which Characters Would you Follow into Battle?

I’ve been thinking of this post for a few weeks now. I think I may have been watching a Narnia movie when I came up with it. Pretty sure. Anyway, I want you to do something for me. Get off your phone or computer or whatever for just a minute. Now think of some books with ridiculous battle sequences. They don’t even have to be actual battles. Maybe a particular character or two or ten is embarking on an unknown journey and knows a fight’s ahead. Or maybe a character has been told not to examine something further. A battle can be any sort of conflict for this. Now let me tell you who I’d follow into battle or stand with against the worst of odds.

Katniss Everdeen

There are way too many reasons for my eagerness to stand with Katniss through anything for me to list them all here. Like she said in Mockingjay Part 1, she never asked for any of what’s happened to her. If I have to give at least one reason why I’d stand with her, then that’s it. Because she starts off fighting just to stay alive, and for her family. But eventually she embraces who she is and what she has come to represent and fights for so much more than just those immediately around her. She’s the mockingjay. And she’s ready to fight for me. I’d be ready to fight for her.

Albus Dumbledore

Don’t tell me I can’t say him if I haven’t read all the books yet. My reasoning for choosing him is because I don’t think he’d ever hesitate to help someone, especially a student in need. But eventually he’s going to find himself in a position in which he can’t get by on his own. And I’d want to be there. So someone could help him for once.

Elvis Cole

Y’all probably don’t know him as well as the first two selections, but I’ve talked about him a number of times in the past on here. He’s an LA private eye. I would want to be right there next to him as he faces impossible odds because that’s what he always finds himself doing. I’m sure some of you don’t even read detective fiction, but this guy doesn’t just think of his clients as a means to make money. His clients are people in need. And they’ve gone to him for help. And he never lets them down. He refuses to.

Master Chief

John-117 is more than the last of the Spartans left. He’s more than a super soldier. He’s more than a guy in fancy armor. He’s hope. Mankind is on the brink of total annihilation, but it’d be impossible to give up if you get one look at him. Knowing that he’s ready to fight to the death. Knowing that he will never give up. Knowing that he still believes the war can be won. No. He doesn’t make me want to go into shelter and hope that he’ll eventually come through and save humanity. Seeing him makes me want to suit up and grab an assault rifle to stand with him. To fight alongside him. Even knowing the war may never be won.

So those are the four characters I would follow into battle! What about you? Which characters would you stand with?
