If you Could Only Recommend one Book…

What would it be? Think of a world in which you could only recommend a single book to others for the rest of your life. Then tell me what it is.

I’m not doing this because I’m looking for new books. I’m really wanting to see which ones are repeated. I can probably think of 50 that I’d expect to see here. But I know mine without having to think about it.

Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell.

There are so many things to be learned from this book, and it’s one of two I’ve read that I believe appeal to any person with a conscience. Recommended it today to a coworker, actually.

So tell me the one book you’d recommend to anyone regardless of their reading tastes or preferences.

  1. OMG. I JUST finished this book! I win 😛 Haha, been crazy busy and I kinda just come home, relax a tiny bit, maybe watch some netflix, and off to bed, then wake up, and off to work. Repeat.

  2. This is very hard for me because I have so many favorites! I would probably say “The Brothers Karamazov” by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It’s steeped in deep thoughts that make you question yourself and your beliefs. Along with that, the plot is tense and there’s so much to be learned.

  3. I don’t have to ponder this one for even ten seconds …

I have to believe that Toni Morrison’s Beloved is one of the most important, gorgeously written books ever produced in America … An uncomfortable/provocative read, which of course is the author’s point.

  4. I guess I have to put my favorites aside for a moment and just focus on a book I feel like everyone should read…

Let’s go with The Odyssey. Pretty important story that also manages to be entertaining. It’s interesting to me how one very simple plot – “going home” – can be made into this huge adventure. And so many others stories are based on it, from O Brother Where Art Thou to The Wizard Of Oz. But honestly, picking just one of these is difficult, and there are probably a dozen others I could have given you right now with equal conviction 😛 I think your recommendation of Lone Survivor is a really, really good one.

  5. I think my all time favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I could read it 100 times without being bored. I read it slower every time and keep finding something I missed before.

  6. The Hobbit was the first book that came to my mind. It’s not really deep or life changing, but nothing I read is. It’s a story I loved as a child and still love as an adult. A good adventure/fantasy novel that isn’t bogged down with too much detail like some other J.R.R.T. books. It’s just fun and sometimes people need fun!
