I see no reason to sugarcoat the fact that I hate this.
Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature yesterday. The committee got it wrong. One can list all of his accomplishments but it wouldn’t change that he shouldn’t have even been considered for the award. There are music awards. There are songwriting awards. There are sales awards and records. So why are we giving this man a literary award!?
What really irks me is that any knowledgeable reader could list quite a few authors who are plenty deserving of this award. But I won’t do that. There’s no point. I’ll only list one. Haruki Murakami. The list starts and ends with him. His work doesn’t need me to defend it because it stands well enough on its own merit.
So now we have a songwriter/musician with a Nobel Prize in Literature but one of the most influential and revered authors of the 20th century still doesn’t. Sounds about right.
Tell me your thoughts.
I just read a friend’s post with the opposite reaction to yours. I haven’t really given it much thought. I think it’s because my reading tends towards material that would never be considered Nobel worthy and, to be completely honest, my lack of knowledge of most of Dylan’s work. On the surface it does seem odd, though.

Yes. Odd. Might as well rename the award and start giving it at the Grammys. 😂

I’m glad I’m not the only one confused by why and how this happened. 😣

Maybe the Committee members don’t read? Or maybe they’re big Dylan fans? Or maybe they’re lost? I still don’t understand it.

When I saw this headline a bit ago on CNI assumed it was another one of those “Goldie Hawn died” style pranks. I think you ruined my Friday night….

I’m guessing you’re not in favor of him receiving the award then?

I suppose I think a Nobel Prize in Literature should go to someone who has a body of work based in literature.

Hahahaha, your post on this is pretty much as ranty as mine was. I am NOT amused. I feel like our community was cheated. And I’m going to be mad about it for a while.

It’s an award the average person doesn’t care about, so I think cheated is a strong word. But definitely odd.

While the average person may not care about it, it is still one of the largest awards for the community as a whole. It’s like politics. Electing a leader for a country is a big deal and yet TONS of people don’t vote. But when you have a horrible leader the country is still effected whether they voted or not, they are still effected by the outcome.
The writing community is still effected by this outcome because a MESSAGE was sent. And plenty readers don’t like what the message had to say. We might not notice when writers are getting awarded for writing awards because we’re busy trying to run our businesses, but it’s plain to see that when writers are NOT awarded for writing awards we sit up and take plenty of notice. And yeah, feel cheated.
